Finding The Lost
Evergreen Cemetery was founded in 1891. Overlooking Stone Run and Gillies Creek, it was planned to be the African-American equivalent of Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery.
Over the years Evergreen Cemetery has slowly been neglected and forgotten. Open grass has turned to thick brush. Invasive trees have pushed over and hidden hundreds of beautiful grave stones, and family plots are slowly being buried by decomposing leaves.
In the last couple of years, due to diligent work by passionate volunteers, we have uncovered acres of lost graves and family plots at Evergreen Cemetery, but there is still a lot of work that has to be done. This website is dedicated to informing the public about the history of Evergreen Cemetery, how you can volunteer, upcoming cleanup events, and recent news.
